Printer Maintenance Information

Most laser printers have a maintenance schedule. At a Predetermined page count, a message will appear on the LCD screen, which says something like "Perform Printer Maintenance".

What does this mean? Is my printer about to stop? What should I do?
This message indicates that a maintenance kit is requires The printer takes a physical count of each page you print and from that it has been determined that at the present page count a maintenance kit needs to be installed.* To insure optimum performance of your printer you should change as soon as possible. Depending on the printer type, your printer will eventually stop printing. The maintenance kit is a consumable item and is not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.

What is a maintenance kit?
A typical laser printer maintenance kit contains paper pickup rollers, paper feed rollers, a transfer roller, and the fuser assembly.

Paper Pickup and Paper Feed Rollers: Often referred as Feed Tires they are used to pickup and feed the paper. Because they work hard, they are subject to mechanical wear, abrasion from paper and oxidation. Most often depending on the type of printing you do, feed tires can wear out before the maintenance cycle and need to be replaced between cycles. They can be purchased separately.

Transfer Roller: This is a black or gray sponge like roller, which runs the width of the paper path and is positioned just below the toner cartridge. During the printing process, this roller is electrically charged and as the paper passes between this roller and the drum in the toner cartridge, the toner from the drum is transferred to the paper. Because it is subject to wear, it can lose its ability to hold a uniform charge. It also accumulates paper dust and can cause dirty prints

Fuser Assembly: Toner is adhered to the paper using heat and pressure to "fuse" or melt the toner into the paper. Because of the heat and pressure this assembly is subject to mechanical wear and electrical failure, it can simply wear out.

Installation of a maintenance kit involves replacement of the parts listed above and any needed cleanup of toner and paper dust, as well as inspection of other moving parts.

These kits are designed to be user friendly, and be can be replaced by the user. This can save the expense of a service call. We offer maintenance kits for Hewlett Packard and Lexmark printers with installation instructions

Exchange kits contain a remanufactured fuser assembly, transfer roller, pickup rollers, separation pad and parts needed to perform the printer maintenance function on the selected printer. With kits that have core charges, the fuser assembly must be returned within 15 days to receive core credit. New maintenance kits are not subject to a core charge. But we do buy used cores. Call us for more details.

*This is based on the manufacturers recommendation. On some machines, a message appears on the display to indicate that maintenance is required. You can continue to use the printer, but for optimum performance it is recommenced that the maintenance kit be installed. Once the maintenance kit is installed you reset the display message with the instructions included. On printers with intervals marked N/A, the manufacturer does not provide a recommended page count between maintenance kits.

Common Error Codes

Error codes are designed to alert the user of a problem with the printer. Below are some of the most common codes with a brief explanation and solution. It is intended only as a troubleshooting guide. In most cases the user can correct the problem without calling a service company. Ones involving fusers, formatters, and memory require professional service.

Most Common Lexmark Error Codes

Lexmark Error Codes do not apply to all Lexmark Models

ERROR CODE

MEANING AND SOLUTION

ERROR 20
ERROR 200

Input Paper Sensor was not triggered - Paper may be jammed at the sensor. Remove toner cartridge for better access to jammed paper. Replace Pickup Rollers

ERROR 21

The exit sensor was not made in time after the input sensor as made.

ERROR 22

The exit sensor was not unmade in time.

ERROR 23

Jam at the duplex unit. Paper is either not leaving the duplex entry sensor in time or not making or unmaking the duplex exit sensor in time. See “Duplex” on page 2-16

Error 24

The defined paper size is too short to print data as formatted.

Error 25

Input sensor made at wrong time. May be due to the paper feeding manually while motors running and previous page in path.

Error 26

Duplex unit is installed but paper tray is not sensed.

Error 27

Envelopes/paper loaded are wrong size.

Error 28

Input sensor not made after pick attempt. Tray is empty or not installed, paper jam in entry throat, or printer is requesting a manual feed.

Error 29

The output bin sensor has not been unmade.See “Output Bin Sensor” on page 2-22.

Error 30

30 Top Cover Open or Print Cartridge Missing Make sure the spring-mounted pin on the printhead shroud is installed
properly and that it is detected by the ramp on the print cartridge as the cover closes. The pin should enter the tower on the HVPS and depress the cover switch.

Error 32

32 Wrong Print Cartridge installed The installed print cartridge is not supported by the Optra printer.

Error 37

37 Insufficient Collation Memory Memory is too full to collate the print job.

Error 38

38 Memory Full Memory used to store pages is full. To verify that the printer recognizes all the installed memory, go to the user menus and print the “Print Menus” test page. Make sure the memory shown on the printout matches the installed memory.

Error 39

Page too complex to print. To verify that the printer recognizes all the installed memory, go to the user menus and print the “Print Menus” test page. Make sure the memory shown on the printout matches the installed memory.
